Church Road 1 is a range of single vineyard wines that showcase the terroir of our best vineyards. Planted on the eastern banks of the Tuki Tuki River by Tom McDonald in the 1960s, our Tuki Tuki Vineyard’s dense clay soils and cooling sea breezes make it ideally suited to producing Chardonnay. This is the sole variety grown here in naturally modest yields of fragrant fruit with a natural acidity and a minerality not felt as keenly in grapes grown at other sites.

TASTING NOTES
AROMAS
The Tuki Tuki Vineyard has typically delivered a vibrant fruit spectrum with an amalgam of citrus and citrus blossom, acacia flower and a richer undertone of ripe peach. Wild fermentation and lees aging in-barrel has overlaid elements of roasted nuts and toasted brioche.
BODY
A fuller bodied Chardonnay balanced by gentle, fresh acidity, savoury umami-like complexity and flinty minerality that gives the wine a long, lithe finish. With age, the wine will develop more complex, savoury nuttiness and will gain breadth and richness on the palate.
CELLARING
While approachable now, good Hawke’s Bay Syrah
will age gracefully for 20 years or more.
